New players in a global market

The rise of America Movil in the capital of the Dutch operator KPN was covered extensively in the press in June 2012. The transaction was worth $50 million. Even though it was not of a colossal size, this investment in a European operator by a Mexican operator is quite significant.

As sovereign wealth fund (SWFs) in financial business capital rise for companies such LVMH, Lagardère, very large groups originating from large emerging nations, are very interested in the European markets including the telecom industry.

Today, America Movil is worth nearly 38 billion euros, having over 162,000 employees, in over 10 countries.

Business opportunities in Europe ...

The euro crisis has rendered these markets affordable. But for what type of business opportunities though?

Will Europe be subject to such business opportunities or will it be controlled by Mexican operators, Middle Eastern or Chinese operators? Will the consolidation of the telecommunications industry accelerate in Europe, leading to the formation of a more concentrated industry made up of a few large telecom operators?

Understanding these trends is a challenge that holds the keys to one’s own future and its future investments.
