East China's Shanghai Municipality recently hold  this International Forum to explore better ways to help local women contribute more to the municipality's economic growth under the current circumstances.

HEC and the International Forum on Women's Development

HEC Executive Education has been represented during this prestigious forum thanks to its alumnus Grace Han (HEC EMBA in Beijing), Executive Director, Healthcare and Seniors, Sodexo China. Grace underlined the  importance of the stake to take part to this strategic event as member of the HEC community. «I believe this represents a major opportunity for HEC Paris to promote its image in Shanghai where the HEC Paris EMBA is currently delivered.  The participants to this conference are  senior representatives of the government, Chinese senior executives in the business and CEO of international companies. Our CEO for Sodexo Greater China, Christophe Solas acted as key  speaker for the session of economic transformation and women participation . »

Women in the luxury industry

Anne Michaut-Denizeau, Professor at HEC Paris presented the story of women in the luxury industry tends to be characterized by the impression that issues of gender parity are not a concern.

While it is true women are well represented in the workforce of all of the luxury companies, their representation falls dramatically at higher levels of leadership. For many women a traditional approach to professional development appears inadequate. Anne explains:  « At HEC Paris, we believe that both companies and universities have to engage into pro-active solutions to attract and nurture talented women within large corporations. Education is an integrated element of women’s success in business in general and in the fashion and luxury sector specifically. We work on developing such solutions in collaboration with companies, aware that ongoing strategic investment in education is fundamental . »

Role of women in the municipality's economic growth

The forum focused on women's participation in the ongoing economic transformation in Shanghai. The forum was aimed at exploring better ways to help local women contribute more to the municipality's economic growth under the current circumstances. 
 
At the forum, attending delegates from both China and foreign countries in the field of women's affairs held seminars and offered their opinions on the opportunities and challenges generated from the ongoing economic transformation and innovation in terms of three perspectives: economic transformation and women's participation, urban culture and women's wisdom, environmental civilization and women's development. Attendees also introduced the achievements and efforts in promoting women's participation in local economic development in their home countries, and proposed ways to promote women's progress in Shanghaï.
